43 / Big changes to the This is HCD Podcast

Edition 43

Hello Reader,

This is HCD turned 6 years old in May. I didn't make a big fuss about it, but I did celebrate it at home.

Did you know that only .5% of podcasts have more than 10 episodes? This is pretty remarkable when you think we are approaching 300 episodes and I expect to hit 1 million downloads later this year.

Some people think I make a lot of money from the podcast. This couldn't be further from the truth. I have spent a lot of money on keeping it afloat, by hiring editors and building a system that hopefully can self-sustain itself.

On September 1 we are moving to a Premium This is HCD model which means that people will have the options of supporting the podcast and get behind the mission in a small way. We have tried to keep the cost down to as low as possible, and landed on a €4.99 per month fee.

So what does this mean?

If like 98% of all listeners, you listen to This is HCD on a mobile device, you will still be able to listen for free - but only to episodes from the last 6-months.

You can still listen to everything for free via www.thisishcd.com - as we want to make sure that people can still reference and listen in who may not be able to afford the Premium feed.

I know this is super important and something we took into consideration about weighing up our options when splitting the podcast up like this.

New episodes

I recently recorded some pretty epic episodes, and am so excited to share with you.

Last week, I spoke with Patrick Hoffner, a 14-year old, based in St Louis in the US and his Mum, Jen Hoffner. I met both of them 10-years ago whilst researching and designing a new service for Cochlear in Australia that connected Cochlear directly to their recipients which was revolutionary for the business at the time.

I met Patrick when he was just 4-years old and at that time I had never worked on a project quite like it. Meeting him really enabled me to connect the dots personally and professionally. I felt such a deep sense of fulfilment by seeing the difference that the Cochlear technology could for people.

I connected with his family and have stayed in touch ever since, and have wanted to share his story with people for so long. So it's a big deal for me to have him and Jen on the show.

What became clear was Patrick helped me align to my sense of purpose.

Why I do what I do, and how I do what I do - is who I am. It's what makes me, me and makes you, you.

The combination of technology, design and purpose enabled Patrick to hear for the first time at aged 1, and the effect that it had on both himself and his family has been profound. We speak about his life now, as a teenager, and what alterations he needs to make to accommodate his lifestyle, which incredibly is not very much.

I also caught up with Greg Bernarda from Strategyzer about working at scale with the business model canvas, Irish with Mollie - an instrgammer who is working to preserve the Irish indigenous language, Opher Yom-Tov, the world's first Chief Design Officer in banking, Heldiney a Director at the Samaritans in the UK and many many more.

If you like what I do, please think about becoming a Premium listener of the podcast.
